We are pumped. We just found a way to bump up our passive income earnings significantly. The change only took a few minutes and it had an immediate impact. Just a single day after this change we’ve made $12.48.
Doesn’t sound like much, right? Barely enough to cover eating lunch out. Don’t sell it short.
Multiplied over an entire month, that amount adds up to nearly $375, or $4,500 a year. That’s in addition to the money we already earn from passive Google ads on the site.
So what did we do?
We’ll, it was extremely simple. In fact, we are kicking ourselves for not doing it earlier. We simply put in affiliate links.
If you’re not familiar, here’s how affiliate links work. You put a link to another company’s product or service on your website. If a visitor from your site clicks that link and then makes a purchase or completes some other action, you get paid.
Our passive sites focus on the travel industry. Travel is a goldmine for affiliate offers. Hotels, car rentals, flights, cruises and more are all available for you to profit from. We were able to put links in pages that were already popular, creating an instant stream of income.
Affiliate links are one of the most popular ways to make money online. Most people already know about them. So why didn’t we include affiliate offers before?
Frankly, we had tried in the past. We sourced our affiliate partners through Commission Junction. If you’ve never heard of this, it’s a clearinghouse for affiliate offers. For any sort of product or service, you’ll find a potential affiliate partner.
For each affiliate, you’ll need to apply and tell the partner a little about your website. They will then accept or decline your application. Once approved, you’ll eligible to download links, ad units and offers to place on your site. When visitors to your site click to the affiliate’s site and complete an action, you receive a payment.
It took quite a while before we found a strong affiliate that also approved us. As a small passive site without much name recognition, many larger travel sites declined our application. In addition, we also searched for affiliates with attractive payouts and that offered value to our visitors.
A few weeks ago, however, things changed. That’s when we applied as an affiliate to TripAdvisor.com. TripAdvisor has great name recognition among the travel audience. We knew that a link to their site would be received favorably compared to some unknown travel site. The program also offered some fantastic commission structures:
Commerce Campaign Commission Structure
TripAdvisor will pay you at least 50% commission of the revenue generated when users sent from your site click on commerce links and/or ads throughout the TripAdvisor site. We offer one of the highest commission payout structures, and have above average conversion rates (40%+).
As well, the site offers content such as reviews and pricing that our users would be interested in. This is an important point. The most successful affiliates don’t just offer something for you, they offer something of value to your readers.
It’s still too early to tell how the affiliate earnings will hold up over time. However, the initial results are extremely promising. If you have a site that could benefit from affiliate programs, check out Commission Junction here to get started.
